Canary Islands tourism and travel to the Canary Islands:

The Canary Islands are situated off the north-western coast of mainland Africa, across from Morocco and the Western Sahara desert. The Canary Islands' neighbours are the Azores, Cape Verde, Madeira, Morocco and Western Sahara.

The Canary Islands group consists of eight main islands of volcanic origin. The islands and their capitals are, in alphabetical order: El Hierro - Valverde, Fuerteventura - Puerto del Rosario, Gran Canaria - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, La Gomera - San Sebastián de La Gomera, La Graciosa - Caleta de Sebo, Lanzarote - Arrecife, La Palma - Santa Cruz de La Palma, and Tenerife - Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The Canary Islands economy is based primarily on international tourism, which makes up over 30% of GDP. The Canaries presently receive around 11 million tourists per year, mostly from Europe.

Canary Islands' time is Western European Time (WET or GMT; in summer one hour ahead of GMT). Canarian time is one hour behind that of mainland Spain and the same as that of the UK, Portugal and Ireland all year round.

Flying to the Canary Islands is the most popular way of getting there but there are Canary Island cruises to consider too, leaving from a few European ports. There are plenty of cheap holidays to Canary Islands and short break Canary Islands holidays are becoming more popular these days too, with a long weekend in the islands costing about the same as a hotel stay in the English countryside!

The Canary Islands currency is the Euro.

Other small, uninhabited or sparsely inhabited islands in the Canary Islands archepeligo are: Alegranza, Lobos, Montana Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.

Canary Islands history - In 1402, the Spanish conquest of the islands began and we will be covering the Canary Islands Spain, complete pacification was not completed until 1495 - Santa Cruz de Tenerife was attacked by a British fleet under the future Lord Nelson on 25 July 1797. The British were repulsed, losing almost 400 men. It was in this battle that Nelson lost his right arm!
