This island has been called a "Miniature Continent" by many, this is down to the different micro-climates and variety of landscapes to be found here. The island is under the official protection of UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve! The north tends to be cool and the south is warm and sunny where most tourists stay. The east coast of Gran Canaria is flattish with beaches whilst the west coast is more rocky and mountainous.

Gran Canaria is the third largest of eight of the islands in the Canary Islands Archipelago, situated in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, about 210km off the west African coast adjacent to Morocco and the southern Sahara at grid reference 27°57'N, 15°35'W . Gran Canaria is located to the southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The Canary Islands belong to Spain. The Capital and largest city is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, known for its annual Carnival, which happens to be the joint capital of the whole Canary Islands group with Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The island group are of volcanic origin, as is the highest point on Gran Canaria; Mount Pico de Las Nieves at just under 1,950m ASL to the dome shaped summit.

Gran Canaria has a dual carriageway autopista 'superhighways' encircling the whole island and up into the mountains. The western and northwestern parts of the island are served by single carriageway roads.

Gran Canaria-Gando is the international and only airport of Gran Canaria, handling many flights to Gran Canaria daily. Gran Canaria-Gando is a local hub for many international carriers.

Most of the tourists visit the southern part of the island. Probably the cheapest and best way to actually see the island is by air-conditioned public buses or Guaguas. They provide an extensive network and can get you to just about ever corner of the island, if you have the time. The drivers are helpful and the mix of tourists and locals makes for interesting journeys.
