the Spanish controlled island of La Gomera is the second-smallest island of the Canary Islands, Gomera is an Arabic word meaning 'small ember', situated in the eastern Atlantic Ocean off the west coat of Africa, adjacent to Morocco and the southern Sahara at grid coordinates 2805'N, 1705'W within the Canary Islands Archipelago. The island is roughly circular, about 22km - 15miles across and the highest point is Mount Garajonay at just under 1,485m or 5000ft to the mist shrouded summit.
The capital of La Gomera is San Sebastin de la Gomera and Christopher Columbus made this his last port of call before crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.
