La Palma, Canary IslandsLa Palma, Canary Islands - La Palma, CanariasLa Palma is one of the popular holiday spots in the Canary Islands and is the fifth largest of the seven main Canary Islands. It is located at 28°40'N, 17°52'W. off the west coast of Africa in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. La Palma's capital is Santa Cruz de la Palma AKA the city of La Palma, the other major town is Los Llanos de Aridane. La Palma has a good road network and it probably worth hiring a car whilst here. All of the main roads are tarmac asphalt and in a pretty good state, but watch out for the many sharp bends and some narrow sections. To get to some of the smaller villages in the north of La Palma you have to travel on dirt roads and in some places, what can only be described as 'jeep' trails. There is a 'ring road' about 180km long that circumnavigates the island. It might be worth using the several local bus routes that unite the main settlements on the island. Different companies covering the same routes run to different timetables! La Palma Airport serves the island with several carriers running flights in and out. The northern part of La Palma island is dominated by the Caldera de Taburiente, the largest known erosion crater in the world and the island has a history of volcanic 'action'. The known volcanic eruptions in living memory are: 1949 Volcano San Juan, Duraznero, Hoyo Negro and 1971 Volcano Teneguia. Highest point of Roque de los Muchachos is just over 2,420m. La Palma island is dominated by the three colours black, blue and green. Black is the colour of the numerous small beaches made of black volcanic sand and most of the volcanic rocks that make up much of the landscape, blue is the surrounding azure sea and green, from the abundant plant life; which on La Palma is the most diverse of any of the Canary Islands flora.
