Canary Islands, Tenerife, Spain - Tenerife Espana

Tenerife, a Spanish province since Christmas day 1495, is the largest of the seven islands of the Canary Islands Archipelago created in the eastern Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Morocco and south Sahara at grid reference 28°19'N, 16°33'W like the rest of the Canary Islands by volcanic action over 3.5M years ago. The highest point is the volcanic Mount Teide at about 3,715m. Tenerife is clearly divided into two zones; a very arid southern part and the very humid and green north.

Puerto Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the north, is the capital of Tenerife and the second biggest city of the island group. The island is served by Tenerife North Airport (TFN) AKA The Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos, local to Santa Cruz-La Laguna servicing Puerto Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Tenerife South Airport (TFS) servicing the Costa Adeje, Tenerife area. The other way to arrive on Tenerife is by boat or ferry, either to Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Los Cristianos, near Playa de Las Americas.

An 'Autopista' dual-carriageway system encircles almost the entire island, linking nearly all of the main towns and resorts. Off the autopista there is a good network single carriageway roads of varying quality, some are quite steep, winding and narrow, mostly unlit at night and often with steep drop-offs either side of the carriageway.

Tenerife's public bus service, or green and white 'Guaguas' operates through a fleet of modern, air-conditioned buses which, generally, run to schedule around the island and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna are served by the Tranvía de Tenerife or Tenerife Tram.

Tenerife holidays have appeal, as some of the best value sun holidays in the brochures, 'all inclusive Tenerife holidays' and last minute holidays to Tenerife being firm favourites. Tourism is the most prominent industry on Tenerife and it is one of the major tourist destinations for some 4 million Europeans each year, the greatest number coming from the United Kingdom. In the south, the popular area known as Costa Adeje, that includes Las Americas and Los Cristianos, has many world-class hotels and facilities together with leisure opportunities for sea and sand worshipers. There are aqua parks, shopping centres and malls, restaurants and a theatre suitable for musicals or use as a Congress Hall, all slightly reminiscent of Las Vegas!

In the more lush and green north the main tourism centre has been around the town of Puerto de la Cruz. The town itself has miraculously kept some of its old fishing-harbour charm now with many northern European influences. This area is a favourite for more mature travellers, notably of German and Spanish origin.

Playa de las Americas - One of the best beaches on Tenerife but not the quietest!

La Orotava, Valley of Orotava

Almond Blossom in the Oratova Valley, with a view towards Pico de Teide, Tenerife Island by Ella Du Cane. The name of the valley is the traditional and a representative city of La Orotava is located at 340 m above sea level with about 38,000 people. Puerto de la Cruz is a small place of La Orotava, the old main port in the valley and a tourist area in northern Tenerife.

Puerto de la Cruz, Botanical Garden - For those like me who are not to keen on usual touristic attractions, the most interesting place to visit in Puerto de la Cruz is the botanical garden, just on outside of the city. The official name of the garden indicates its original purpose - Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava. There is also a small botanical garden at La Orotava.
